About the Artist
While I occasionally work on location, I am essentially a studio artist. Most of my work is done from photos taken in the field-- on hikes, camping, or when traveling. This means vacations are semi-busmen holidays and I am constantly on the lookout for new material. Besides Northern California, Isle Royale and Crater Lake, I've painted scenes from Alaska and national parks of the West. The outdoors provides endlessly interesting subject matter. I hope to catch a particular moment in time at each very special spot. The paintings can take anywhere from three to six months to do; the longest has taken me an unexpected year.
My drawings and prints are usually a more personal and intellectual expression although of late I've been producing landscapes too. Nonetheless you will find more figures and more intimate formats in the prints. Original prints are produced by hand in limited editions and are therefore less expensive than “one of a kind” paintings. Time involvement often depends upon the number of plates needed for particular images with each plate producing different colors and more press runs.I have exhibited in numerous venues ranging from group exhibits in Glasgow, Scotland to one or two person exhibits in the Bay area. I have been in seven one or two person shows, and in over fifty group exhibits and various galleries. A resume is available upon request.
My favorite honor to date has been receiving two Artist Residencies at Isle Royale National Park in Michigan, 1993 and 1996. From these came inclusion in a book, The Island Within us: Isle Royale Artists in Residence 1991-1998. I enjoyed a residency at Crater Lake, Oregon, contributing to its" Centennial Celebration" in the year 2002. In addition I have had drawings and paintings in The Christian Science Monitor and Art in California magazine as well as having received a purchase award from the Triton Museum in San Carlos, CA.
The paintings shown here include works from Isle Royale National Park located in Lake Superior and accessible only by boat. We stayed in a cabin over two miles from electricity and the Ranger Station on the end of a peninsula of great natural beauty. The “Corner, Klamath” is a scene from Northern California where my family and I have spent much time hiking, rafting and camping over many years. It is a favorite place filled with beauty and adventure. Recently I have been working on scenes from Pt. Reyes National Seashore where I do volunteer work. As you see, each piece has a history and a story which I would gladly relate upon your request. If you have questions about an individual work or my work in general, I would be glad to address them.
